Philosophy of ESOL
It is my belief that culturally responsive teaching is necessary in today's classrooms. Because of the diverse makeup of the students in our classroom it is essential that we create a welcoming environment in our classrooms to encourage those students who are learning to speak and write in the English language. It is my belief that it is important to create a physical environment in the classroom that displays a wealth of cultures. It is also my belief that even though we are expected to teach teach the English language to students, that we must do so while still preserving their native language and cultural customs.
When teaching students who have native languages other than English, it essential to teach them strategies as well as language so that they can be active learners. It is also important to be familiar with their IEP or language goals in order to appropriately accommodate them, and differentiate instruction to provide them the greatest benefit.
